Speech and Language

For parents with children on the autism spectrum, an inability to communicate effectively with their child can bring a great deal of anxiety and stress. While many children on the lower end of the spectrum may be non-verbal, children on the other end who are very verbal may also experience problems through misuse of words or concepts. Like being a visitor in a foreign land where you don’t know the language, the inability of children to communicate their needs can be very isolating and scary.

The Elliott Clinic provides speech and language therapy services to individuals and small groups with communication disorders.  Services are provided by fully licensed Speech/Language Pathologists and Speech/Language Pathology Assistants. Each client is carefully evaluated and a program is designed to meet their unique needs.  The Elliott Clinic provides an eclectic therapy approach. Therapists use a variety of methodologies such as Discrete Trial Training, behavior management plans, generalized play skills and augmentative alternative communication supports.

Speech and Language Therapy can help to bridge this gap. We work on a wide range of skills to improve a child’s ability to communicate more easily and effectively with the people around them. From non-verbal communication such as gestures or picture exchange cards (PECS) used to convey a thought to speech pragmatics which teaches when and how to use common sayings like please or thank you and concept skills related to larger abstract concepts like freedom or fairness, Speech and Language therapy creates a roadmap of solutions for a child struggling to communicate.
